Gynaecomastia

Swelling of the breast tissue in men is a common problem and the medical term for this is gynaecomastia.

It may occur at puberty, usually due to hormonal changes, or later in life when it can be related to a variety of medical conditions and drugs.

Assessment will begin with a careful medical history and clinical examination.

Depending on these findings further tests may include an ultrasound, mammogram, biopsy and blood tests.

Treatment may involve correcting an underlying medical condition or altering existing medication, as gynaecomastia is a recognised side effect of some drugs.

If the swollen tissue is painful or is causing embarrassment it can be removed.

This can sometimes be done with liposuction but may require surgery to remove very firm tissue.
